Independent Gift Guide 2022

Updated: Dec 9, 2022

I've been passionate about supporting and celebrating independent shops, designers, makers and artists for a long time, and I love finding something unique when I'm looking for a gift. One of the things I loved the most in my previous role at The Old Firestation was researching and discovering new artists and makers, and it's something I've continued to do.

I'm creating a small guide here of some favourite artists and makers I've spotted throughout the year, as well as a few that are firmly on my go to list when I need a gift. There are so many more I'd like to mention, but here are a few to start...

Makers, Designers and Artists

Millie Rothera - Handmade, bright and bold home and lifestyle products. Definitely a couple of things on my wish list from here!

Luke Holcombe - Limited edition original prints, inspired by themes of nature, memory and time. Based in Bath, Luke has a wonderful collection of prints and cards on his website, and on Etsy too.

Bishy Barnabee's Cottage Garden - Beautiful flower seeds, with lots of gift boxes to choose from. I love that you can select seeds to sow month by month, I'll be looking up what I can plant in January for my wish list!

Sally-Anne Stewart - Local to us in Florence Park, Sally-Anne creates amazing prints inspired by both nature and the urban environment.

Skogr Studio - Functional and decorative objects made from reclaimed wood. Beautiful, tactile, cubism inspired forms.

S.K Works - A combination of screen printing and leather work, all of their materials are carefully chosen and made to last. I have one of their gorgeous purses and it's perfect!

Risza Jewellery - Based in Brighton, Risza makes stunning jewellery, mostly inspired by Timorese ceremonial and traditional objects.

Wald - Studio Wald make prints, paper goods and home wares, using carefully sourced materials. I'm a big fan of their pads and planners, and I've loved using my wall planner this year!

Independent Shops

The Stationary Cupboard - Stationery is a bit of an obsession for my partner and myself, and I'm pleased to say we've passed it on to our two boys as well! This is a treasure trove of gifts for both children and grown ups and everything is ethically made, earth friendly and plastic free.

Harriet's Plants - Sustainably grown indoor and outdoor plants, so many to choose from and all peat free. I have a gorgeous fern, gifted to me by Jo at Firain, and I love it!

The Mamahood - A beautifully curated collection of small independent brands, all family run.

Bam - A non-profit independent store in Easton, Bristol. You can also shop online, with so many gifts to choose from.

Artists and Objects - A wonderful collection of work by makers and artists, Adam has a brilliant eye for putting together fantastic pieces from UK based makers. Also one of my stockists ; ).

Prior Shop, Bristol - Not-for-profit independent shop showcasing design-led handcrafted work that's made responsibly and sustainably.

I'm always looking for new artists, makers and independent shops. Do let me know if there are some on your wish list you'd love to share with me! You'll find me at emilymarstonstudio@gmail.com
